Body Image & Self Esteem:

Rediscovering Your True Worth

In a world that constantly pushes ideals of “perfection,” it’s easy to feel like you don’t measure up. Whether it’s social media, societal expectations, or even past experiences, many of us struggle with how we see ourselves—our bodies, our worth, and our abilities. If you’ve ever found yourself being overly critical of your appearance or questioning your value, you’re not alone.

What is Body Image?

Body image refers to the way you perceive and feel about your own body. It’s not just about how you look—it’s about how you think you look, which can sometimes be distorted by unrealistic standards or negative experiences. A poor body image can lead to dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, and even affect your mental and physical health.

What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is your overall sense of self-worth and confidence in your abilities. When you have healthy self-esteem, you are able to value yourself, set boundaries, and face life’s challenges with resilience. However, if you struggle with low self-esteem, you may feel inadequate, doubt your abilities, or engage in negative self-talk that holds you back.

Common Signs of Poor Body Image & Low Self-Esteem:

● Constant comparison to others

● Avoiding mirrors or photos

● Negative self-talk about your body or abilities

● Feeling unworthy or not “good enough”

● Excessive focus on weight, appearance, or external validation

● Anxiety around social situations or being seen

The Impact on Mental Health

Poor body image and low self-esteem can take a toll on your mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, disordered eating, and feelings of isolation. It’s important to remember that these feelings are not a reflection of your true worth. They are often the result of societal pressures or past experiences, and you have the power to change them.

How Therapy Can Help

As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with a compassionate and holistic approach, I support individuals in building a healthier relationship with their bodies and themselves. My goal is to help you break free from negative thought patterns, rebuild your self-esteem, and find peace in who you truly are—not who society tells you to be. Through a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and self-compassion techniques, we’ll explore the roots of your negative body image and self-esteem issues, and work toward healing and self-acceptance.

What You’ll Learn in Our Sessions:

How to challenge negative self-talk: We’ll identify and reframe the critical inner voice that fuels insecurity, replacing it with self-compassion and kindness.

Developing a positive body image: You’ll learn to see your body as more than just its appearance and appreciate it for all that it does for you.

Building resilience against societal pressures: Together, we’ll explore how to detach from harmful external expectations and embrace your own values.

Fostering self-worth and confidence: Our sessions will focus on helping you see your inherent worth, independent of appearance or external validation.
